Being on the south side is obviously not helping but it’s surprising that it’s that much hotter than the rest of the house, which is staying cooler.

It’s because you don’t know how to manage it. For a short term, few hot days, the trick is to air all night and shut everything up early in the morning as soon as the temperature starts rising. Your house will trap cold just as well as warm. But British people think that open windows = colder so they mess this up every time. I lived in the UK for the last three summers, in a perfectly ordinary row house from the 70s. It was fine with normal heat management strategies that one would use in eg Germany. Yes, if a heatwave lasts a long time this strategy will start to fail, if you can’t cool properly at night, but it works for at least three days of over 30°.

Ok but there isn’t really a totally perfect correspondence. Arguably Trump hasn’t even started “mass deportations”, just extremely brutal ones. They aren’t actually managing to deport people faster than the previous administration right now, and Obama still holds the record by far. Anyway the important thing is it’s not a one-to-one “they are deporting people so we are 80% of the way from them seizing power to death camps”.

That is also how the study describes it’s findings, just to be extra clear. It is probably the only vaguely realistic study of this kind that has been done so far though, so it’s as good evidence as we’ve got about how helpful these tools are(n’t).
